Dear Classmates:

Hopefully, you received in February a copy of the order signed by our own General Emory Mace and "The Boo" requiring the muster of The Class of 1963 for the 40th Homecoming Class Reunion.  The operation name is "Ante up, Bubba."

As you know, in our earlier letter this year's cost of all class activities will be $325 per couple or $162.50 per person.  A brief run down of our cost per person is as follows:

Thursday night    $30 for oyster roast, hot dogs and chili
(this is a bone we throw the hotel for the special room rate,
especially in light of their not getting the banquet night

Friday night        $54, which has in it $2,000 for the rental of Boo Hall,
three carving stations and wine and beer.  Booze covered
           in a later charge

Saturday morning    $11 for continental breakfast

Saturday mid-day    $12 for tailgate which includes tent in the most prime
position of all classes; walk-around food and beverages
           and a $20 football ticket

Saturday night    Everyone is on their own.

Misc. expenses    $20 gift per person, $12.50 booze, beer, drinks at the
hospitality room, drinks Friday night and at the ballgame, and $3.00 to cover mailings and decorations.

Please accept the fact that we negotiate in the best interest of the Class of '63 not knowing what everyone's pocketbook or tastes are after 40 years.  We do our best to hit the main stream and over the years I believe we have been there.

For Friday arrivals the charge will be $285 per couple since the Thursday activities will be missed.

Forty years ago the class presented to General Clark a globe for The Daniel Library.  Since then, as a class under the leadership of Class Agent, Ed Newton, we have an exemplary record of giving to the Citadel Foundation.  The Class has also participated generously in giving to "The Class of '63 Scholarship Fund" supervised by our Ben Legare.  In addition there have been special projects that carry our name such as Bill Hartzog's portrait, a classroom in Bond Hall, a bench and bezel in the courtyard at The Holiday Center, and many individual gifts of time and money.

Coincidentally, Emory gave this operation the name "Ante up Bubba."  Through these 40 years, the class has lost many members through service to country, accidents, and natural causes.  Now each of us has a wonderful opportunity to honor them by "Anteing Up" a reunion gift to The Citadel Foundation-Stadium Fund. Joe Turbeville's enclosed letter eloquently speaks to the importance of our generosity.

To participate, please make your check payable to The Citadel Foundation-Stadium Fund and mail to:

Harry Mims
Class of 1963
PO Box 1406
Orangeburg, SC  29116-1406

Please note that this also counts toward the total class giving to The Citadel Foundation and is tax deductible.  Should we reach the $20,000 level in giving to The Stadium Fund we will receive naming rights of certain parts of the stadium.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to call Joe or any of the reunion committee members.

Go Dawgs!

August 11, 2003

Dear Classmates:

I am looking forward to our reunion and renewing the friendships that were established forty years ago.  As we return to campus we will notice the many changes that have occurred since our graduation.  Some things have not changed, the homecoming game will still be a mandatory formation for all cadets and the game will be played in Johnson Hagood Stadium.  The Citadel is in the process of a revitalization program of the stadium, and I hope the Class of 1963 will adopt this as a project for our 40th Reunion.

We were there during some of the most exciting times of the football program.  The Citadel had their first bowl game victory and their first Southern Conference Championship.

I believe that under the leadership of Les Robinson as Athletic Director and Ellis Johnson as Head Football Coach we are on the way to establishing a program that all of our alumni and fans can be proud of.  I admit I am a bit prejudiced because as a high school football coach Ellis was a leader and captain of the first football state championship that I was privileged to coach.  After high school graduation Ellis attended The Citadel where he was an outstanding player for Coach Bobby Ross.

As we journey back to campus one of the first sites we will see is Johnson Hagood Stadium (built in 1948).  This will not make a good impression on any one seeing this facility for the first time.  In the sixties it was the best facility in the Southern Conference.  Today other members of the Southern Conference use the condition of Johnson Hagood as a recruiting tool against the Citadel.

I hope that you will join other members of our class and make a generous contribution to the Citadel Foundation/Stadium fund and help The Citadel to again have one of the best facilities in the Southern Conference.  Looking forward to seeing everyone at Homecoming and enjoying a victory over Wofford College.  GO DAWGS!

Sincerely,

/s/  Joe Turbeville

Talking Points Stadium Revitalization of
Johnson Hagood Stadium:

Johnson Hagood stadium is not just a football stadium; it is a viable part of The Citadel.  It is also:
"    Home to six largest gatherings of The Citadel family
"    A place where institutional loyalty is developed and fostered.
"    A place for cultivation of supporters for all of The Citadel's programs.
"    A place for alums to network and socialize, thus staying in touch with the needs of the college.
"    A leadership and human performance laboratory for all student athletes.
"    A part of the socialization process for the Corps of Cadets.
"    It is the front porch of the college……………….its public image.
"    It has a significant history making it a Charleston landmark.

What are the benefits of the Revitalizing Johnson Hagood Stadium
"    Instill pride among students, faculty, administration, boosters, alumni and the general population in the region.
"    Underscore The Citadel's commitment to remain among the nation's top NCAA Division I schools in one of the    nation's premier conferences.
"    Send a powerful message about The Citadel's commitment to compete and win future and prospective student-athletes.
"    Broaden the base for ongoing financial support after the project is finished.
"    Obtain higher levels of giving after the campaign, thus increasing more scholarships revenue and help to improve the overall financial situation for athletic programs.
"    Build a stadium that complements the community and improve the public's perception of The Citadel's athletic program.
"    Create a new stream of revenue in excess of the debt payment, which will benefit all of The Citadel's athletic programs.  "An endowment for the future".
"    Give The Citadel greater flexibility in scaling ticket prices and marketing football tickets to a broader graphic base, thus generating higher attendance and more revenue.
"    Keep The Citadel's football facilities comparable to Southern Conference peer institutions and strengthening the program.
"    Create a quality, comfortable atmosphere so that fans can enjoy The Citadel Athletics and be a part of the Bulldog spirit.

Other Points:
"    By raising funds through private contributions, The Citadel's financial risk is minimized.

The 40th Class of 1963 Reunion Directory is going to press within the next couple weeks, so if any classmates have any changes to their listing now is the time to speak up because after its in print the next opportunity will probably be the next reunion.

Send any changes to Len Schodowski - email: elemess@aol.com; FAX: 803/502-1558; Phone: 803/502-0776; or snail mail: 124 Antietam Drive, Aiken, SC 29803-7676.

Since the directory is being funded out of the reunion fee, those classmates attending will get their copies in Charleston at our 40th Reunion.  Those unable to attend will have an opportunity to purchase the directory for the cost of printing & mailing (approximately $10-$12) after the reunion is over.

Below is the list of "Lost Lambs" that we have still not been able to locate. Any assistance would be appreciated.
